#THESENSECHECK INTERVIEW SERIES 6 minute check-ins with smart, beautiful and interesting women who know a thing or two about what it takes to be successful.

LAURA MAPPAS Editor, SA Style Magazine

The new winter issue of SA Style magazine has just dropped and so I thought it would be the perfect time to introduce you to my next guest on the #thesensecheck interview series, Laura Mappas, the glossy's editor. I met Laura for coffee recently and she is one of those people who just ooze natural, effortless style and so I immediately got the sense that she was perfect for her role. Laura has worked all around the country for different magazines but has now happily settled back into Adelaide life and oversees all of the mag's content with her small but mighty team. I am so excited that Laura was able to take time out of her busy schedule and share the details of her inspiring gym routine, why networking is so important and her number one piece of advice for making it her very competitive industry.

What do you do and what does a typical day involve?

I don’t really have a typical day, which is one of the things I love so much about my job! I spend a lot of time flitting between sales meetings, events and photoshoots, and I always allocate some ‘desk time’ to answer emails and get some writing done! I’m also lucky to have a lot of flexibility, which allows me to divide my time between the office and home.

What sense do you use most in your role? Describe how you use it.

The sense of sight is definitely up there as I edit and proofread all of the pages of the magazine, however I think hearing is just as important. In my role it’s vital that I listen to what readers and advertisers like or want to see more of in the magazine, and equally important to hear constructive criticism. This is how we improve our product and continue to remain relevant.

What does your morning routine look like?

I try to get to the gym two or three mornings a week – although as the cooler weather rolls on in this isn’t always easy! I get home from the gym just as the rest of my family are waking up, and it’s then a mad dash to get the kids ready and off to school before I start work at about 9am. After a strong coffee I will usually spend some time answering emails and catching up with my team to discuss everyone’s movements for the day. After that it’s writing, liaising with photographers and stylists, working with the design team, writing and lots of meetings!

Who or what inspires you?

I’m inspired by creative women who have a go at something they are passionate about, particularly those who manage to turn a passion into a business. I’m also always inspired by working mums – some seem to do it with ease and I would like to know the secret!

How do you stay on top of trends in your industry?

I’m lucky enough to work with an amazing group of creative people and as a team we all try to stay on top of emerging trends by following key influencers, as well as national and international designers. Networking and social media is equally as important.

What’s your number one piece of advice?

For people trying to get their foot in the door I would say intern, freelance and get as much work published as possible. It’s also really important to have an understanding of the online environment and various social channels.
